The Meadows of Napa Valley

Community for Napa’s Seniors

In the heart of California’s wine country, the Meadows at Napa Valley Senior Living Life Plan Community was long overdue to remodel and expand their primary amenity building. Designed to support the active lives of local residents who want to grow old without leaving their community, The Meadows’s new space creates a sophisticated yet relaxed, friendly, and engaged atmosphere. From its new pool and fitness center to its refined dining venues, our expansion for The Meadows brings people together through shared activities and strong connections to their wider Napa community.

The Meadows’s strong ties to Napa’s community, culture, and aesthetic informs our design of the entire expansion, inside and out. The exterior reflects a Spanish revival style with clay tile, a terra cotta roof, and wood on the upper balconies. Inside, warm exposed-wood details and an impressive concierge desk welcomes residents and visitors to what is now a full-service life plan community, with freestanding memory care, assisted living, and 60 new units for independent living. The layout of the building centers around gathering and community. Residents can now choose from three different dining options ranging from a casual bistro to an expansive formal dining room, supported by a full-sized commercial kitchen. Previously seating only 60 people, this remodeled space now entertains 160 in 4,500 sq. ft. and can be used as an event space. An indoor pool and fitness room helps residents exercise and stay healthy together. The reimagined Meadows at Napa Valley begins before residents even enter the building. Since the campus is located in California’s wine country, a vineyard was incorporated into the landscape; here, residents can learn from a local school to make their own wine. Nearby, they can get together on a putting green, toss a bocce ball, or play pickleball on dedicated courts. An outdoor gathering space is perfect for live music, larger courtyard gatherings, or simply relaxing by the fire. By combining our experience in senior housing and renovation work, we were able to manage a complex project that spanned multiple overlapping jurisdictions—with 12-15 different permits, multiple buildings, several contractors, and a need to keep an entire campus up and running the whole time. In essence, we tore off two wings while people were living next door. To prove our project’s success, the residents not only still talked to us afterward, but they were also grateful for our clear and inclusive communication throughout the phased process. We transformed The Meadows into the community everyone here hoped for, and we did so smoothly.

The Meadows’s expanded amenity space, like its residents, belongs to Napa in every way. Our deeply connected design approach becomes clear almost immediately upon entering The Meadows: Full-height glass windows, accentuated by high-vaulted ceilings and custom metal mesh drum light fixtures, frame views of Napa’s lovely landscapes. Throughout, our rustic/contemporary design theme references Napa’s history and wine culture. The central atrium space is adaptable, accommodating different-sized events while still feeling warm and welcoming, through artful hanging screens that play with light and volume to define intimate spaces within the larger room. The renovated dining room highlights wine in elegant and surprising ways—reclaimed wine bottles create custom chandeliers, reclaimed wood from wine barrels become a feature wall above the buffet, and a wine wall is the centerpiece of the dining room. Emphasizing local farm-to-table food reflects the foodways of Napa and elevates the restaurant experience at The Meadows beyond the expected. Our interior design team researched Napa’s natural and cultural influences. Evoking the famous rolling, lush hills and landscape, our color palette employs earth tones, neutral greens, warm browns, watery blues with hints of burnt orange, suggesting the natural textures of Napa’s vineyards. Old maps of the region inspired custom-designed hanging screens and hand-drawn map artwork by our Brand team; basketweave tiles surrounding the pool reference traditional work of Napa’s indigenous residents. “Wine country casual” is how we describe our elegant yet approachable expansion for The Meadows—for example, residents told us that their redesigned dining spaces are as nice as any other restaurant in town. Overall, our expansion for The Meadows authentically captures the spirit of Napa for them and for their families, now and for years to come.
