Vi Hilbert Hall at Seattle University

Student-Centered Design

Nestled in the bustling heart of Capitol Hill, Jesuit Catholic Seattle University is experiencing significant growth, prompting the need for new student housing that reflects its urban character and commitment to personal reflection. In response, we crafted a student-focused design for Vi Hilbert Hall, thoughtfully accommodating 307 beds across eight floors for upper-level and graduate students. Our design prioritizes efficiency and flexibility, offering a range of units from studios to four-bedroom apartments, each outfitted with modern built-ins and modular kitchens that maximize natural light and ventilation. Throughout the building, student lounges serve multiple purposes, providing inviting spaces for both private study and communal gatherings. Vi Hilbert Hall embodies cura personalis, the Jesuit principle of caring for the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. This ethos shaped our approach to design, emphasizing active, community-led spaces that foster collaboration and reflection. Drawing inspiration from the Jesuit style of teaching, we created study environments that support the cyclical process of action, reflection, evaluation, and renewal. The ground-floor lounge, designed as an open and inviting area, caters to the vibrant pedestrian activity of the surrounding campus, making it accessible for residents, commuters, staff, and visitors. A memorial to Vi Hilbert, the building’s namesake and a tribal elder of the Upper Skagit tribe, anchors the lobby, connecting residents to a rich cultural heritage. The grand staircase, wrapped in warm-toned hickory, draws the eye upward toward an open balcony, creating a bright, comfortable, and welcoming atmosphere, especially at night. On the top floor, a spacious kitchen serves as a communal hub where residents can come together to cook, dine, and socialize, fostering a deep sense of community for all who call Vi Hilbert Hall home.
