URC Dining & Marketplace Renovation

Hospitality-Quality Dining with the Luxury of Choice

Driven by resident feedback and COVID health and safety concerns, URC Davis’s dining area was updated with a renewed focus on wellness, choice, and flexibility. Challenged to create two dining venues where there once was one, the design team developed two distinct spaces, each with their own uniquely branded experience. The casual walk-through dining “Marketplace” and the more traditional, sit-down “Orchard” dining experience provide residents of URC Davis with the luxury of choice. The “Marketplace” – which used to be a self-serve buffet – now has a light, bright, open kitchen with chefs to directly serve residents, and is very popular for its convenience and health-oriented food options. “The Orchard,” on the other hand, enhances a modern steakhouse aesthetic by incorporating saturated colors, organic patterns, and new lighting fixtures to soften the architecture of the space, revitalize the mood, and create varied, intimate seating options.

Inspired by the flora and fauna of Davis, California, URC Davis’s renovated dining space utilizes local color palettes and patterns to connect its interiors to the surrounding landscape while brightening the dining area. Rounded arches, organic patterns on divider screens and carpets, soft fabrics, and gold-finished, rounded light fixtures further establish a lively atmosphere for residents to engage with each other. Dark trim and faux beams were removed from the space while a white stretched ceiling was added to update and modernize the traditional Craftsman aesthetic. Pre-existing dark structural beams were left in place as a visual draw for residents. The design team's selection of the acoustic materials that blend into the interior spaces undetected was guided by resident feedback. These elements include a stretched acoustic fabric ceiling, acoustic panels on portions of the upper walls, and a custom acoustic art panel above the banquettes of The Orchard dining room. The new Marketplace is now visually open and appealing, with a glass wall being installed above the banquette seating to mitigate sound, creating a higher-end experience for residents. Easy-to-see plate options, wider circulation, and improved lighting and acoustics in the new Marketplace dining section contribute to a layout that speeds up meal service. Additional improvements include new dimmable LED lighting throughout, as well as furniture designed to senior residents’ dimensions and specifications. A closet for the discrete storage of walkers was added, with additional visibility and walkability improvements occurring from decorative transparent screens that define each dining experience, and the removal of blind corners from view-blocking banquettes. As a renovated space, the URC Dining & Marketplace gifts residents a renewed sense of belonging. Responding to their needs in an elegant, modern way demonstrates to residents that their thoughts and opinions are heard loud and clear, and that their tastes inform what a sophisticated space can be.
