Avanza 490

Move Forward Toward the Future

Avanza 490 is a landmark affordable housing project in San Francisco’s vibrant Mission District, created for formerly homeless and extremely low-income families and individuals. This seven-story, mixed-use building of 81 apartments is a symbol of progress and community transformation, designed to meet both the urgent need for housing and high standards for wellness and livability. Avanza 490 integrates on-site support services, including stabilization programs and health and wellness resources for children, families, and individuals, ensuring residents have the support they need without leaving home. The concept of "movement" is at the heart of Avanza 490’s design, a theme reflected both metaphorically and literally in the building’s name. Avanza—which means "move forward" in Spanish—represents the forward momentum of the residents and the community itself. Situated atop an underground waterway, the building emphasizes flow and movement in its very structure, symbolizing the journey of growth and renewal. In honor of the Mission District’s cultural roots, the brand design incorporates the neighborhood’s rich Latinx heritage. Historical research revealed the area’s mid-century automobile culture, which inspired elements of retro car design and a vibrant color palette. The influence of the district’s street art scene is also woven into the aesthetic, celebrating both the past and the present of this dynamic neighborhood. Bilingual signage throughout the building reflects the inclusivity and accessibility central to the project’s mission, with high-contrast materials chosen for their durability and ease of readability. At the groundbreaking ceremony, the community came together in a moment of unity, with a prayer and a moment of silence led by a local community leader. Today, Avanza 490 continues to honor this sense of collective spirit, offering a home for those who are working to get back on their feet, move forward, and create a stable future. The project stands as a beacon of hope, progress, and empowerment for the residents of the Mission District.
