Moxy Marriott South Lake Union Hotel

A Hotel with Attitude

Established hospitality brand, Marriott, was seeking to tap a younger generation of guests with their new hotel, Moxy. Following their successful launch in Europe, we partnered with the bold developer to bring Moxy to Seattle’s booming South Lake Union neighborhood. Our team worked to define a local translation of the brand’s look and feel, setting the standard for future U.S. locations. Moxy South Lake Union integrates Moxy’s fresh approach with authentic, Seattle spirit, along the way, integrating technology, self-service design, and bold style.

Architecture Story

Moxy Meets Pacific Northwest

Marriott’s Moxy guests are "fun hunters” who work hard and play hard—all day and night. Our team used their U.S. Moxy launch to define the brand expectations for the Seattle market. We offered a balance of consistency with a distinct approach to incorporate notes of South Lake Union’s unique context in the history of the city. Moxy SLU was our opportunity to evolve the European brand to fit the U.S. and Seattle code requirements. We used skillful design interventions and close contractor collaboration to bring a 147-room hotel to a tiny, 56,000 sq. ft. site. To overcome the small footprint, we designed angled bay windows that give people a glimpse of what’s up and down the street of this bustling tech neighborhood. They also offer guests views of Puget Sound and add an extra 8-9 sq. ft. to each room. Curved canopies and warm entry lighting welcome guests at this, and every Moxy. Just beyond, metal paneling seamlessly disguises an emergency exit door in the entryway. Every guest room is designed to accommodate the brand’s signature furniture, queen sized beds, and user-friendly storage options. Electrical, mechanical, and plumbing materials are left exposed, giving a raw edge to the design.
