Verdant Community Wellness Center

Flexible, Creative, and Functional

Verdant Health Commission aims to educate and empower individuals and families in taking control of their physical health and emotional well-being. Their vision was to transform a dull, uninspiring building into a vibrant, welcoming community hub for Lynnwood residents. Our design reimagines this 8,000 SF former bank building into a whimsical space that educates, engages, and fosters healthier lifestyles. A variety of inviting spaces allow visitors to decompress, interact, and learn about wellness in a setting that exudes vitality and warmth. The facility includes flexible spaces to accommodate Verdant’s administrative teams as well as two large classrooms, smaller conference rooms, consultation rooms, and a demonstration kitchen for teaching healthy cooking. The original bank’s dark, dreary interior was a stark contrast to the mission of Verdant Health. Our design invigorates the space with bright blues, yellow-greens, and fractal-inspired geometry, creating a whimsical, uplifting atmosphere. The focal point of the design is the demonstration kitchen, where registered dietitians lead classes on healthy eating, meal prep, and grocery shopping on a budget. The main floor also features a large presentation room for events like music therapy. A mezzanine above overlooks the double-height space below, adding a dynamic layer to the interior. Our design cleverly works with the existing floor plan’s irregular shapes, crafting an engaging layout that complements the bold colors and forms. Mindful of the budget, we used conventional materials in unexpected ways. OSB plywood, a nod to the region's agricultural heritage, forms a faceted ceiling that cascades through common areas and into the main meeting room. This design evokes the look of a tree canopy, with meandering hallways in green mimicking forest paths. By incorporating community-focused programming, bright finishes, and unexpected forms, the renovation provides the Lynnwood community with a one-of-a-kind space to nurture their health and develop lasting wellness habits.
