Salvation Army Eastside Community Center

Supporting Mind, Body, and Spirit

Serving individuals and families of all backgrounds through a wide range of diverse programming and interconnected services, the Salvation Army Eastside Community Center is a space that supports anyone who enters through its doors. As the recipient of the 2017 NAIOP Community Impact Award, it truly is a center for community. With programming and services that ranges from the iconic red-bucket Christmas donation drive to afterschool meals and education programs for students, the Salvation Army Eastside Community Center aims to address the minds, bodies, and spirits of the communities it serves. The lobby mixing space connects each of the wings together in a cohesive, modern fashion and provides the Salvation Army Eastside Community Center’s visitors with a common space to connect and hang out, resulting in a finished building that feels integrated while still reserving separate spaces for each of its components. Down the hall, program and service-supporting amenities include administrative offices, a nursery, a gymnasium, a dining hall, kitchen, and food bank, and a worship chapel. The design and flow of the dining hall and kitchen are customized to maximize the impact of the food bank and meal programs offered there. Free meals are provided to anyone who is in need, and an after-school youth program feeds young students while they work on homework. Those who need it are encouraged to take snacks and ingredients from the food bank home with them. A well-designed stairway leads upstairs, where the classrooms and multi-purpose meeting spaces provide opportunities for community members to grow their minds. Overhead, eye-catching light fixtures reflect a color palette of blue, orange, and yellow that corresponds to the “mind, body, spirit” design direction. Using heavy timber to bring beauty into the space on a budget, wood is used in walls, ceilings, and within furniture. This balance between cost-effective and good-looking design helped the non-profit continue to do the most good with the largest impact.
