Population health is about more than just treating illness—it’s about keeping people healthy. Our client’s shift from a fee-for-service model to a value-based approach emphasizes the importance of wellness and prevention, with success measured by how well people stay healthy. This vision comes to life in a new healthcare center that integrates traditional clinical services with wellness facilities, fostering a holistic approach to health.
The center combines a community-oriented gym, studio, and spa environment with essential services like primary care, urgent care, women’s health, imaging, and pediatrics. Our design connects these diverse services through open, thoughtful architecture, blending seamlessly into a vibrant urban setting. The goal is simple: to help people get—and stay—healthy.
To achieve this integration, we began by focusing on maximizing operational benefits, drawing from the few examples of fully integrated models that exist. We realized that simply combining wellness and healthcare wasn’t enough; our design needed to embody warmth, professionalism, dynamic activity, and a sense of inclusivity. It had to communicate the essence of both wellness and clinical services in a way that felt cohesive and holistic.
Our design concept reflects this philosophy by promoting overall well-being. Biophilic elements—such as natural light and exposed wood—help to reduce stress and soothe visitors while they work out, learn about nutrition, or wait for a physician. Thoughtful color palettes and materials guide and orient visitors through the facility, enhancing the sense of calm and connection. Indoor and outdoor spaces further tie the design to its community and bioregion, creating a seamless flow between the facility and its surroundings.
Programmatically, the building is designed to provide clear pathways for visitors. With the exception of urgent care, visitors enter through the v-shaped center of the facility. General fitness spaces serve as bridges to more specialized functions, such as integrative health, nutrition, physical therapy, and imaging. Clearly defined spaces and materials separate yet connect different functions—such as a lap pool from aquatic therapy or fitness training from physical therapy.
Our aim: A design that feels both kinetic and relaxing, empowering and healing—revolutionizing the way we think about healthcare.
