Layers of relaxing views and amenities create an inviting sequence of spaces at The Club at the Park, a four-story residential building at the Columbia Tech Center in Vancouver, Washington. Our client asked for a resort-style community complete with hotel-caliber conveniences, high-end finishes, and custom fixtures. Residents have access to outdoor and indoor entertaining spaces, a saltwater pool and spa, conference rooms, and sophisticated fitness area. Stone, tile, and wood material choices are upgraded versions of materials typically seen in suburban communities. The development consists of two L-shaped wings that converge at the grand entry. More than just a way to get in an out, our client trusted our vision for this central shared space, which connects the two wings of the building and feels like a portal to the park. The glass walls of the lobby give a spectacular framed view of the park, pulling it forward as if it was the building’s backyard. Everything in the courtyard space visible from the lobby—the clubhouse, pool, yoga space, canopy-covered seating, lighting—is custom designed to feel like a vacation spot. By using a VR model to immerse decision makers in the design, we effectively showed multiple versions of various spaces to make the design process more inclusive, enjoyable, and ultimately more cost-effective. This method helped determine the most comfortable and functional unit layouts and aided in adding personality to the amenity spaces through customization. Attached elements such as fireplaces, hearths, wall elements, a custom deck in the lobby, and unit kitchens and bathrooms were all tailored to fit in with the overall vision. A creative approach to floorplans creates special moments and good circulation within the studio, one, and two-bedroom units. Recessed balconies are focused on the park side only, to reinforce the rare experience of living alongside a park and give residents added privacy as they enjoy the natural setting. Overall, the energy efficient unit design lowers the operating costs of the building. The Club at the Park brings to life our client’s clear, cohesive vision for resort-style living in a truly special setting.
